CURRENT PROJECT WORK

"Men 2 Men" Mentoring Event

  • Location: Lafayette, IN - October 2024

"Make them Smile Again"

Location: Cape Coast, Ghana

  • GRC is taking part in the Make them Smile Again Children's program hosted by the NAJ Foundation. The program visits a local orphanage to annually contribute to. The focus of the event is to spend time with the children. As part of the program food, water, and basic necessities, are purchased and donated to the orphanage.

  • GRC and Yamoransa Lab Bogoso are bringing to the event, technologies to spark the children’s interest in STEM. For these children, these are their first experiences seeing more advanced technologies such as a drone and the Virtual Reality (VR) system.

  • Children are given the opportunity to practice flying a kid friendly drone and taught about its potential similar applications in Ghana.

  • The VR experience provides a way for students to learn about difficult concepts that are hard to demonstrate when drawn by hand. The VR allows them to interact with a 3D experience.

Small Business Vocational Training

Primary Locations: Bogoso, Ghana and Sekyere-Dumasi, Ghana (near Techiman, Ghana)

Secondary Locations (Pending Funding Raised): Tamale, Ghana and Kyebi, Ghana (Eastern Region)

  • In collaboration with the Lab Mangers from Bogoso Lab, two vocational training events are planned for the upcoming year. One will be held at Bogoso, and the second, held near Techiman at a sister-lab.

  • Two additional trainings are planned for this year as well, with the hope that enough funds will be raised to conduct 2 additional trainings, one in Tamale, and one in Kyebi (Eastern Region).

  • Components of each training event include the following topics: Information Communications Technology (ICT), Entrepreneurship, Finances/Auditing, and Cyber Security. Trainings are geared towards Artisans, Traders, Craftsmen, and small business owners.  Examples of attendees include Seamstresses, Furniture Makers, Wood Carvers, Electricians, Plumbers, Welders, Metal Workers, Traders etc.

  • Our team of trainers then work with the attendees to develop each attendee's online business platform and presence. Attendees receive a certificate for completing the training.

  • Post-training, the attendees can contact the event trainers for any potential questions they may have throughout the year. Lab managers work throughout the year at their own lab location, and therefore attendees can return to the lab closest to them, at any time, to receive assistance if needed.

Sanitation Project: Installation of Male and Female Restrooms for the Bogoso ICT Lab

Primary Location: Bogoso, Ghana

  • The Yamoransa Lab in Bogoso is utilized by the surrounding primary, secondary, and senior high schools for its modern computer labs. These schools, within their weekly class schedules, attend the lab to utilize the facilities and receive teaching assistance from the lab managers.

  • The classrooms are furnished with a projector and desktop computers for the students to use. The space is used by the lab instructors and surrounding teachers to instruct school subjects, but special focus is placed on ICT and Basic Design.  The lab provides many students with their only opportunity to develop basic computer skills, including typing. The lab facility is also available to reserve as a meeting location for local clubs and meetings from members of the surrounding community.

  • For 2023, the average annual attendance of people who received training from the Lab was approximately 15,000 individuals. The lab does not have completed restroom facilities. A set of male and female stalls have been planned on both the main and second floor of the facility. There are restroom stalls for 7 toilets per floor. In total, 14 toilets and 10 sinks for hand washing are needed.

  • Materials that need to be purchased include fittings, toilets, sinks, water pipes, and electrical cables. A well has already been installed, and a poly tank and stand are present. After purchasing materials, the water tank needs to be raised, water pipes must be connected and run to the water well, tank, and building. Contractors for the plumbing and electrical wiring have been selected to conduct and install the remaining project components.

  • The lab is in a very open and visible space to be easily accessible to surrounding schools. However, due to this very public space, open defecation is very visible and provides no form of privacy to students or visitors to the lab. Funds are deeply needed to finish the remaining restrooms. Completing the restrooms will improve the experience of those utilizing the lab for teaching, training, and community engagement.

K-12 Robotics Club Program

Primary Location: Bogoso, Ghana

  • The Bogoso Yamoransa Lab seeks to develop a dedicated K-12 youth robotics club program for those within Bogoso and the surroundings villages. The lab instructs students on the topics of robotics, electronic circuit design, computer coding, and 3D part design, printing, and technical drawing.

  • To provide students with a more intensive instructional experience, there is a desire to create a robotics club program. This will allow students to work in smaller groups and have more direct interaction with the robotics components than the typical big classroom style school instruction. The club experience will also provide youth with a more in-depth, hands-on, experience utilizing robotics, wiring electronic circuits, and development of transferable computer programming skills.

  • The K-12 robotics program will require purchasing many more Arduino Electronic Circuit kits and Lego Mind Storm kits so that many youth can participate in the club and have a more individualized learning experience.

Design of a Smart Irrigation System Demonstration

Primary Location: Bogoso, Ghana

  • A student team designed and won first place for their project, as the most innovative project at the lab's annual robotics competition. Their project was a small-scale Smart Farm.

  • To build off this success, aspects of that project will be taken from small-scale to real life size. This project focuses on providing training and funding for the trainers and students to scale up the team’s project. The project allows the trainers and students to continue developing their robotics, computer coding, electronic circuit design, and fabrication skill sets.

  • The team will utilize soil and temperature sensors to determine when the plants need to be irrigated. The system will include a drip irrigation system composed of irrigation lines and a water pump to provide water to the plants when needed.

  • A solar panel will be used to recharge the battery for the system. The solar panel auto adjusts every 4 hours to allow the solar panel the best opportunity to collect energy.

  • A vegetable crop will be selected for use in the demonstration. A vegetable crop is preferable since such crops require shorter growing periods to harvest and allows for multiple harvests throughout the year.

  • The project will serve as a visual demonstration of robotics and electronic circuit design specific to agriculture.

Annual Christmas Program

Primary Location: Kumasi, Ghana

  • Christmas in the developing world often looks no different than any other day in the developing world.

  • Holding our Christmas program allows us to provide a Christmas day experience for less fortunate children which is held on Christmas day in the outskirts of Kumasi as an annual program in partnership with a local Bible Club. Children from the surrounding community attend and are told the Christmas story of Jesus Birth and fed a Christmas Day meal.

  • Funds raised beyond the program day expenses are used to purchase school supplies for each child, for the upcoming school term. The children that take part in the event, are invited to join the Bible Club, and can attend throughout the year. The students are taught stories from the Bible and focus on memorizing scripture. The Bible Club allows the children an outlet to play with their peers, learn the word of God, and develop their reading skills.
